At the New York International Auto Show in
Manhattan the Volkswagen Polo has been declared the 2010 World Car of the Year.Merit, value, safety, environment, significance and emotional appeal are the criteria for the World Car of the Year. Already in 2009, a Volkswagen model ranked the highest: the Golf. This year the top three contenders for World Car of the Year title were, in alphabetical order, the Mercedes-Benz E-Class, the Toyota Prius and the Volkswagen Polo. "We're honored that the Volkswagen Polo was chosen by this distinguished group of jurors," said Prof. Dr. Martin Winterkorn, Chairman of the Board of Management of Volkswagen AG. "After the great triumph of the Golf last year, we are delighted to repeat this success with the new Polo. These automobiles have reaped numerous awards, winning well-nigh every prize the automotive industry has to award. This shows Volkswagen is on the right track and is offering arguably the best range of products in its history." Now in their seventh year, the annual World Car awards have become one of the world’s most prestigious, credible and significant programs of its kind. The majority of the 59 World Car jurors from 25 countries throughout the world chose the Polo from 30 entries. Each juror drives and evaluates new vehicles on a regular basis as part of their on-going full-time professional work. Through their respective outlets they collectively reach an audience of many millions worldwide. The New Volkswagen Polo is available for ordering in Ghana from the beginning of 2010. New Volkswagen Pick-up: Dakar Rally Proven.Months before it arrives in Ghana in summer this year, the Amarok, the pick-up from Volkswagen, was given the ideal opportunity to demonstrate its power, durability and off-road performance by following the Volkswagen Motorsport team in the gruelling Dakar rally. The course, that began in Argentina on 1 January and saw contestants cross the Andes to Antofagasta on the Pacific coast in Chile before returning to Buenos Aires on the 17 January, meant traversing 5,600 miles of the toughest terrain in South America. As official support vehicle of the Rally, a fleet of 35 Volkswagen Amaroks was used to accompany both the Volkswagen Motorsport team and the event organizers, Amaury Sport Organization (ASO). Keeping pace with the victorious Volkswagen Race Touaregs (who achieved a 1-2-3 podium finish), back-up teams travelling in the Amarok pick-ups finished all 14 legs of the race and crossed the finishing line unscathed; an accomplishment only half of all competitors are normally able to boast. 1000 km on a single tank At high altitudes, in high temperatures, and with petrol stations so far apart, engine efficiency is key to a vehicle's success in Dakar. With mountain passes and the world's driest desert, the Atacama, to contend with, rally rules state that all vehicles entered for the event must have a minimum range of 800 kilometers before refueling. Amarok's range? 1000km on a single tank! Unbelievable! Keeping up, staying safe Designed to tackle the toughest off-road terrain, the new Amarok is offered with an electronic differential lock (EDL) and Off-Road ABS to significantly shorten braking distances in off-road conditions or gravel roads. While the rally cars are able to rush up and down the sand dunes at not much less than top speed, supporting vehicles need to take a much more "safety-first" approach. Hill Hold Assist, Hill Descent Assist and advanced Electronic Stabilization Programme all meant that Amarok was able to keep up, and stay safe too, across every type of terrain. -- 2009 04 24

Volkswagen Golf VI - World Car Of The YearThe Volkswagen Golf VI has taken the title of World Car of the Year 2009. A jury comprised of fifty-nine international automotive journalists from twenty-five countries around the world chose this year's World Car of the Year, which was announced this morning at a news conference during the New York International Auto Show. "It is a tremendous honor for Volkswagen to have its global best selling model, the Golf, named the 2009 World Car of the Year," said Stefan Jacoby, President/CEO, Volkswagen of America, Inc. "This is a great way to kick-off the new Golf here in America. We're excited for the arrival of the sixth generation Golf, which will be in Volkswagen showrooms later this year. Simply put, we believe this is the best Golf ever." The Golf, a perennial favorite in the Volkswagen line-up, has sold more than 26 million units in 120 countries, making it one of the top selling vehicles of all-time. The new sixth generation Golf first debuted at the Paris Motor show last fall, and made its U.S. debut at this year's New York International Auto Show. The Golf has been designed to be quieter, sportier, fuel efficient and present a clean, distinctive appearance that - staying true to Volkswagen - is fun-to-drive. -- 2009 02 02 -- 2009 02 01 Volkswagen makes Dakar Rally historyThe Volkswagen team made motorsport history in Argentina by claiming the first diesel-powered victory in the history of the world's toughest motorsport event, the Dakar Rally. Not only that, but the team's South African driver, Giniel de Villiers, led home a Volkswagen 1-2 finish. After more than 5000km of competitive rallying, De Villiers and his German co-driver, Dirk von Zitzewitz, took their TDI-engined Race Touareg across the finish line in Buenos Aires nearly 9min ahead of the sister Volkswagen of USA/South Africa pairing Mark Miller and Ralph Pitchford. Third place went to American Hummer pilot Robby Gordon, who was more than 100 minutes adrift. De Villiers was ecstatic: "I'm so happy to have clinched it for Volkswagen. This victory is worth more to me than any of the titles I won in touring car racing. The key to our success was the Race Touareg, which ran like a charm throughout, and I want to thank everyone at Volkswagen for that. I won the first Dakar Rally not staged in Africa, and it was the toughest event I have ever contested."
Kris Nissen, Volkswagen Motorsport Director, added: "We did it. We wanted to be the first manufacturer to win the Dakar Rally with diesel power, and we have achieved that. And with a one-two victory, beating our strongest rivals Mitsubishi and BMW."Carlos Sainz, who took six of Volkswagen's ten special stage victories before crashing out of the rally while leading, paid tribute: "Giniel and Dirk deserved to win this tough rally. One must never underestimate the Dakar Rally; you must prevail against it to win."
